  • Brownie Espresso Delight

Mmmmm... dunk it in your coffee for an extra treat!  For moist brownies, use semisweet chocolate rather than chocolate chips and make sure not to overbake.

    Brownie Espresso Delight

    Ingredients:

    1/2 cup unbleached all-purpose flour

    1/2 tsp. baking powder

    2 Tbsp. cocoa powder

    1 Tbsp. warm water

    1 Tbsp. vanilla extract

    1/2 tsp. instant espresso powder

    2 Tbsp. unsalted margarine

3 oz semisweet chocolate, chopped fine

    1/2 cup sugar

    1/8 tsp. salt

    1 large egg, lightly beaten

    Instructions:

    1. Place the oven rack in the middle rack and heat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line an 8" square pan with parchment paper.

    2. Whisk flour and baking powder together in a small bowl and set aside.

    3. In a separate bowl, whisk the cocoa, water, vanilla and espresso powder together and set aside.

    4. Microwave the margarine and chocolate together in a medium microwave-safe bowl on 50 percent power until melted, about 1 minute. Whisk until the mixture is smooth

    5. Whisk in the sugar and salt until completely incorporated. Whisk in the cocoa mixture, then whisk in the egg. Stir in the flour mixture until just incorporated. Do not over mix.

    6. Pour batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs attached, 20 to 25 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through baking. Do not overbake.

    7. Cool completely on wire rack, about 1 hour, lift brownies out of pan by grasping onto the parchment paper, and cut into 12 brownies.

  • Coffee Boost!

    Car run on coffee

British engineers have built a car that runs on coffee! While this isn't the first one (plenty have done it before), their coffee car clocked in at 66.5 miles (107 km) per hour- the fastest a coffee car ever did- and it drove over 200 miles (322 km). The car was initially engineered for the Brititsh Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and was used as part of a show. It was built in order to raise awareness of alternate fuels.  One day not only America may run on Dunkin', but their cars too! But the amount of coffee beans needed instead of gas can get real expensive!

  • Health Benefits of Coffee

Recent Studies of Health Benefits of Coffee! In recent years, some 19,000 studies have been done in an attempt to understand the risks or benefits of consuming coffee. What might be more surprising is that recent studies have shown that coffee can actually be good for you. This is good news for you coffee lovers out there!

    Drinking Coffee Is Healthy

“"Overall, the research shows that coffee is far more healthful than it is harmful," says Tomas DePaulis, PhD, research scientist at Vanderbilt University's Institute for Coffee Studies, which conducts its own medical research and tracks coffee studies from around the world. “For most people, very little bad comes from drinking it, but a lot of good."”

It seems like health benefits far outweigh the risks of caffeine.  Some benefits include: Reduced risk of Alzheimer's disease and Dementia, as well as Diabetes type 2.  Caffeine intake was also associated with a reduced risk of dying from cardiovascular disease and cancer.  So if you can't manage without your daily coffee break, feel vindicated!

  • Clean Caffeine?

Did you ever wonder what your local coffee shop does with all its leftover muffins and old coffee grinds at the end of the day?  Most of course go right into the trash.  But Starbucks in Hong Kong, which alone produces more than 5,000 tons of coffee grounds and uneaten baked goods, has implemented an innovative idea: turn the trash into laundry detergent and bioplastic!  The process is done at a bio-refinery.  The stale baked goods are mixed with fungi to break down the carbs into simple sugars, then the mix is fermented.  The bacteria transforms the sugars into succinic acid, which is the agent that ultimately turns the wasted food into detergent, among other things.

  • Coffee may make your job easier!

A recent study reported that people who drink coffee before sitting down at a computer, sensed less neck and shoulder pain!  A select part of the participants drank coffee or tea  and then for 90 minutes worked at a computer task using only a mouse.  The researchers discovered that those who drank coffee (whether they had previous neck or shoulder pain or not) had less pain during those 90 minutes then those who did not drink coffee.  Future studies will be conducted to see if it is the caffeine that it is truly reducing the pain.  So make sure to take that cuppa joe before starting work!
